I need a new laptop

Post by Robert Paulson » Sat May 24, 2014 1:44 am

The laptop I'm currently writing you from is an old in XP running POS. It does this wonderful thing where when you boot it it takes 15 minutes until you can actually do anything with it. And while I could speed that up a bit, this computer is like 8 years old, I don't think adding memory and an SSD are really worth it.

I need a new laptop, I'm setting my budget between $400-$900.

I use a lot of GIS software, Pro tools, and do multi-tasking of spreadsheets, word docs, graphics, and GIS.

My wants:
large screen (large enough that if I have a spreadsheet and a word doc open, I won't have to squint to read the spreadsheet)
SSD boot drive
some decent hard drive space (none of that Chromebook "cloud computing" bullshit)
something that isn't a total POS (I'm looking at you Surface 1, 2 and 3)

Would like but not required:
has graphics card capable of playing some games

Not required at all:
CD/dvd drive (I got a USB blu-ray drive)

Anyone got any websites, specific recommendations, "this is what I would get" type suggestions.

I'm so behind on laptops, I haven't owned one in years, haven't really even needed one.

Make sure that whatever you get uses an SSD. Do not compromise on this.
