I got an HP zd7000 at Sam's this time last year, and I'm pretty pleased with it. I'd nearly quit using my computer until I got this thing. At least I can take it where I have access to wireless broadband to download stuff.

I'm thinking about buying this one.

http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/oid/147 ... on.do#tabs

On the plus side it has 1024MB of DDR memory and 1.8GHz processor. That gave me a knee jerk reaction to buy it, until I found out most other laptops are using DDR2 (albeit, only 512 MB).

Can anyone explain one's better than the other (other than the obvious 1024 > 512)?

It really depends on what you want to do with the laptop: If you are planning on converting movies/editing videos: get the larger, slower memory.

If you plan on doing regular stuff (i.e. not working on large amounts of data at a time) get the DDR2 memory

Consensus of opinion from others seems to be that Gateway sucks.

I've only heard good things about HP and Toshiba. Anyone have a preferred brand?

Gateway sucks like a vacuum with a cocaine addiction (or Jake Roberts)

Good choice with Toshiba. I've heard nothing but bad things about anything HP that aren't printers.

My HP laptop put my cock in a Crippler Crossnut and works well with the Photosmart 8250, to boot.

I'm really not sure how that's a compliment.

So yesterday I spent the morning backing up my hard drive files so I could wipe my old PC's memory before I gave it away. Apparently I've accumulated 2 GB of porn since the last time I did a back-up in July.

I'm looking at laptops now. woo.

I want it to do school work on while I'm away from my desktop (so in the library), and also to look up porn on the intern... I mean be able to run statistical models of thesis data while I'm in the field. I'm thinking about this one:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/gene ... R1002_USEN

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ED ... oding=UTF8

http://www.outpost.com/product/4734739? ... &week=1888

The only I don't like is it has window's media center edition, anyone heard about these... like "holy shit the turion blows up" or "you'll get about 1 hour of usage with that power supply" or "holy shit there is a better computer for much cheaper somewhere else"

*EDIT* I just read that media center edition IS XP professional? Is that right or just some creative marketing?

No, Media Edition isn't XP Pro. That is a fine laptop if you are willing to spend a thousand dollars. It's more of a multimedia machine than a business style laptop, but it will do what you need to it to do.
